The end of the year is drawing closer which means it’s time to reflect on what I had planned on doing this year, and what I actually achieved.
Looking back at last year’s goals I had planned to:
1. Write six books
This was probably an ambitious goal given my lack of time to write (only a few more years and the kids will be in school), but nevertheless I managed to complete 2 non fiction books, 13 short stories (which are sold separately and bundled into 2 collections), and 1 novel.
The novel took me the longest to complete at just under six months, although to be fair I had other projects going on in the middle of that time frame including Nanowrimo which took me out for all of November.
But even if they all weren’t full length books, I would say I made this goal.
2. Write awesome kickass blog posts of around 1000 words each
Yeah, I probably did a few great blog posts this year over my various blogs, but certainly not to the extent I had planned to. This blog (which I now use as a personal blog) hardly got any attention at all.
3. Make videos
Nope. Didn’t make one.
4. Diversity posts to reach a wider audience
I sort of did this, although blogging did take a back seat this year.
5. Take my own pics
This is something I am doing now. Since I got an iPhone 5 it’s made it even easier to take my own pics. I occasionally use stockphotos still, but I try to use my own pictures where possible.
6. Write press releases
Didn’t write one.
My goals for 2013
Next years goals have changed from this year as I move my focus much more on writing fiction. And now that I’ve written my first novel (and drafted my second) it’s a reality of where I want to head.
So, for 2013 my goals are:
1. Write 4 books.
Since I’m writing novels now, I think I need to lower my expectations on how many I can write. So I’m aiming for three novels and one non fiction book. That’s a book every three or so months. I can do that.
2. Grow as a fiction writer
I still have a lot to learn about fiction. Although I’m getting much better and growing as a writer, I always want to be improving and learning so I can write better books.
3. Read more fiction
Notice a theme? LOL. Yes I plan on reading more in the genres I want to write in. Especially the bestselling books in that genre to see what it is that made that book resonate with readers.
That’s it. I actually have pretty modest goals for 2013. I’m moving into a new direction and want to take things as they come as I move further away from internet marketing. I’ll probably swing back into blogging occasionally because I still enjoy that, but the rest of the time I plan on learning and practising in my new direction.
I hope 2013 brings you all lots of peace, love and happiness. (And money and success. Duh!).
