The kids and I were just out the backyard with some sparklers before I put them to bed (so me and hubby can have some wine for New Years Eve) and we look up and saw this skywriting in the sky.
It says “Are You Going To Heaven”. Bit morbid don’t you think?
Does it have something to do with New Years Eve 2011? Is it this year’s theme for the Sydney NYE Fireworks?
If anyone knows, please leave a comment below.

P.S. They added more .. It was a message from some Church .. Seriously? Come on guys! Weird though, right!

.“Are You Going To Heaven” Skywriting Sydney NYE 2011
My sister and I were thinking the same thing. But we waited by the harbour with our 2 kids each since 1300hrs for the fireworks to begin AND when we saw the first showing of “are you going to heaven” some guy said it was a mistake – the second message said “HOW?” and we were still bewildered wondering “huh”? as my youngest went to get a drink – coming from NY and 9/11 day we were looking around to see if anyone was thinking the same “huh?” but most were just waiting for the next message being written. Well, as i looked for my youngest in the crowd, and the letters of the next word came out “TRUST C-H-R-” all i can say was lets get out of here” I-S-T” really??? not a HAPPY NEW YEAR message but a “R U GOING TO HEAVEN” “HOW?” “TRUST CHRIST”?? – we left at 2000 – waited 7+ hours to see our first New Years in Sydney and ran to the metro hoping for nothing more than a mere stupid ,message that had us sitting in our hotel room waiting to see if anything did happen. Fortunately, nothing did, but who on earth said it was OK to skywrite something like that with a mixed group of fascinating folks waiting for hours. I only wondered if it was just in our thoughts but happy to see it really wasn’t. We heard a group of youngsters in the metro taking about it the same..using more profound words as “Opera house may not be standing too long after this…who knows..” whoever thought it was ok to write that was simply just not thinking about folks but of $$” Thank you for writing about it.
It was so weird though. But I agree after I found out that it was religion motivated I was disappointed. The church has waay too much money!
Hope you still had a good time!

Interesting how a simple question like that can fill people with fear and dread. A real sign of the times. Every religion has its zealots. I guess whoever did has had a little win, cause your talking about it. May 2012 be a year of peace, joy and prosperity.
Thanks Roz,
I wish you all the best for 2012 too. Let’s make this year awesome!

As a person that respects freedom of choice and free speech, I think its a question that I have been asking myself as my next birthday I will be 40 years old, yuck I dont want to be 40 I prefer to be 21 for ever. haha. But this is reality. In this day and age people are educated enough to ask questions? I think its another question so many questions in life. As I go through my mid life changes, this will be one of many questions ask? But you know what that is my free choice to think about it as its these people to ask the questions? I wonder honestly how many people think about their life, their death and either that question are you going to Heaven? Will they trust christ as the sign writer said will they trust something else? As we see death on tv everyday 6pm news etc. I think its just another thing to think about in many things we have to think in life.

It was a very good message. a good thought to ponder on. I’m glad that there are people that are willing to spend so much money just for the sake of strangers. The message didnt say what group it was from,no affiliation, just a nice message
I was there and was quite offended as the message was based on fear- “Are you going to heaven?” implies the alternative is that you are going to hell. And of course there was only one option/religion to get you to heaven, also written in the sky. People were camped out on the harbour all day to get a good spot and were forced to look at it as it was in the sky directly in front of everyone. A captive audience made up of people of many religions and many people who don’t want or need a religion at all. I’m sure the few people that may be interested or cared whether they were going to heaven or hell or not, could find their way to one of the thousands of churches in any city or town if they wanted to and they certainly didn’t need writing in the sky to get them there. The message was completely irrelevant to the hundreds of thousands of other people who were there to enjoy themselves and not be bullied by fear mongering. This kind of intolerance and narrow-mindedness (“my way is the right and only way”) is why millions if not billions of people around the world have lost their lives throughout history (religious wars) and why we have terrorism etc today. I have no problem with people choosing to have spiritual beliefs and a personal relationship with whatever deity they choose – it’s when they try to push it on others when the trouble starts. Christians seem to do this much moreso than other religions (compared to Judism for instance)and it really is offensive. A happy, peaceful, tolerent and open minded 2012 and beyond to you all.
I agree that it was inappropriate for the situation. But it certainly got people talking!
All the best for a wonderful, healthy, happy & prosperous 2012!

Every person I was sitting with was appalled when we saw that. Why should people wanting to enjoy their own new years celebration have to be bombarded with a message from Christians? If we wanted that we could CHOOSE go to a church (which of course we would not). What choice do we have when it is written all over the sky which EVERYBODY shares. They might as well have spray painted it on everyone’s houses.

I came across this blog as I googled sky writing sydney new years eve. I live in Queensland and brought my family down to Sydney at Christmas to see extended family and to go take our kids to the NYE fireworks for the first time. We were transfixed to the message and wanted to know what the next letter would be. The reason I googled this today is because I am a school chaplain and wanted to explain the sky writing in a family Chapel service occuring shortly. The key to understand the sentiment behind whoever wrote the message is to read the scripture it was taken from, John 3:16. These are the recorded words of Jesus Christ who said, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Verse 17 follows, ‘For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. I believe it was written (both in the sky and in the Gospel of John) as a message of love not of fear(though the opening line of are you going to heaven? would no doubt be confronting for many). I did not want to comment on its appropriatness on NYE in Sydney but rather to explain what I believe would have been the sentiment behind it.
Jon, please dont lose sight of the fact that 10s of thousands of people there would have found that completely irrelevant and utter nonsense actually. And people were pretty much forced to watch it, its not like they could have got up from their spots to leave. Please understand also that your passages from the bible also seem like complete lunacy to people who were not brainwashed into believing that stuff. You indoctrinated people should stick together and keep it to yourselves, i have no problem with
that. Highly unlikely that you are going to get un-brainwashed people to believe what you believe in and trying to do that is what causes a significant amount of the world’s problems. Regards
